Through the Lens of Gratitude: Honoring Stephen Kato ’93

Stephen Kato ’93 has spent years generously volunteering his time and talent to photograph life at Mid-Pacific. From student-athletes making game-winning plays to dancers mid-air on stage to faculty members receiving well-deserved recognition, his images beautifully capture the spirit and energy of our community.

You’ve likely seen Kato’s work gracing the cover of Mid-Pacific Today, featured on our social media and website, or displayed proudly on office and classroom walls. He understands that a photograph captures a fleeting moment, gone in an instant, and often impossible to recreate.

Kato thrives in a school environment because he sees himself as a lifelong learner of photography. Constantly studying and reflecting on each experience—often journaling after every shoot—he is always looking for ways to grow in his work. His approachable nature naturally draws in students and adults curious about photography. It’s not uncommon to see him pause during an event to offer guidance, share tips, or even invite others to try out his gear.

“Stephen Kato was a familiar and friendly face during my time at Mid-Pacific, always behind the lens and always smiling,” shared Ethan Chang ’23. “When an ACL injury led me to photography, our shared passion brought us closer. Stephen has been a constant source of encouragement, even sending a care package when I was away from home. He is more than a photographer. He is a mentor, role model, and friend who lives with care and intention.”

Ann Kondo, a retired teacher and faculty member, had Stephen as an eighth grader in her Self & Society class in 1988. She reflects warmly on Kato as both a student and a dedicated alumnus.

“He’s always been a dedicated learner, so it’s no surprise to see him still so involved at Mid-Pacific after nearly 40 years,” said Kondo. “His love for the school is clear in how thoughtfully he photographs our students. He aims to create lasting memories for families, especially those who can’t be there in person, knowing how quickly these moments become cherished reminders of their time here.”

Stephen Kato exemplifies what it means to be passionate about his art and the process of learning and giving back. Through his dedication, he freely shares his time and talent to teach, guide, and support others, fostering a love of photography within the community he cares for so deeply.

Stephen Kato ’93 has been named the 2025 Alumnus of the Year, the highest honor bestowed by the Mid-Pacific Institute Alumni Association. This prestigious award recognizes alumni who have demonstrated exceptional service to the school, unwavering loyalty and a commitment to advancing Mid-Pacific’s mission. Stephen has exemplified these values through years of dedication, generously giving his time and talent to the school through his photography and other countless acts of support. Although he may not be the loudest voice in the room, his quiet contributions have made a resounding and lasting impact. Stephen will be formally honored at the 2025 Alumni Pā‘ina on July 19. We invite our alumni community to join us in celebrating his achievements. For more information, visit midpac.edu/2025paina.
